The much-anticipated Dussehra festival in Himachal Pradesh has commenced with a vibrant procession and the unveiling of tableaux depicting various deities. The festivities, held at Shivpuri Dham in Samtana village of Hamirpur district, began on Saturday, marking the start of religious and cultural events leading up to the main celebration.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the procession, a significant prelude to the Dussehra celebrations, traversed a considerable route, starting from Bijhari and making its way through Garli, Mahere, Barsar, and Bhota, culminating at the district headquarters in Hamirpur. The spectacle was enhanced by the presence of a chariot carrying idols of Lord Rama, Goddess Sita, and Lakshmana, alongside artistic tableaux that brought to life various divine figures.
Adding to the cultural richness of the event, thirty-five artists from outside the state participated, showcasing their talents at marketplaces and prominent intersections along the procession’s path. These artists contributed to the festive atmosphere, drawing crowds and adding a professional flair to the traditional proceedings.
The procession officially commenced from Shivpuri Dham following prayers and religious rituals. The tableaux featured a diverse array of deities, including Lord Ganesha, Goddess Lakshmi, Goddess Kali, Lord Narasimha, the Aghori form of Lord Shiva, Lord Hanuman, Lord Bhairava, and the Rameshwar Shivling, illustrating a wide spectrum of Hindu religious iconography.
The chief acharyas of Shivpuri Dham, Ashish Sharma and Keshav Sharma, stated that meticulous planning and adherence to safety protocols were observed prior to the procession’s commencement. Their involvement ensured that the event was conducted smoothly and with reverence.
Shivpuri Dham’s Dussehra festival is widely recognised across Himachal Pradesh for its elaborate religious ceremonies and cultural presentations. A highlight of the festival is traditionally the burning of effigies representing Ravana, Kumbhakarna, and Meghnada. The annual event is organized with robust public participation under the spiritual guidance of religious leader Swami Shekhar Suman, who oversees the arrangements and spiritual aspects.
The central event of this year’s Dussehra celebration is scheduled to take place in Samtana on October 20. Preparations are underway for the burning of a colossal 120-foot-tall effigy of Ravana. Complementing this, effigies of Kumbhakarna and Meghnada, each standing at 50 feet tall, will also be ignited, creating a dramatic and visually striking conclusion to the festivities.
Beyond the traditional effigy burning, the event promises a variety of attractions for attendees. Cultural programmes featuring local and invited artists are planned, along with a spectacular display of fireworks, expected to illuminate the night sky and add to the celebratory mood. These elements are designed to provide a comprehensive entertainment experience for families and individuals attending the festival.
Hamirpur Deputy Commissioner Gandharva Rathore is slated to attend the main Dussehra event as the chief guest. His presence signifies the importance of the festival and the local administration’s support for its continuation as a significant cultural and religious observance within the district.
