Netaji Subhash Chander Bose Memorial Post Graduate College in Hamirpur has secured the overall best rank among all 142 government colleges in Himachal Pradesh. Rajkiya Kanya Mahavidyalya, Shimla, was ranked second, and the Centre of Excellence, Sanjauli, secured third place.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that the Directorate of Higher Education initiated a ‘State Ranking of Government Colleges of Himachal Pradesh’ for the 2023-24 academic year. In this second assessment, the Hamirpur college achieved the top position in the overall performance category. The directorate had established three distinct categories for colleges based on student enrollment and the number of courses offered: Category ‘A’ for colleges with over 1,000 students and all streams, Category ‘B’ for colleges with below 500 students and all streams, and Category ‘C’ for colleges with fewer than 500 students and offering limited streams. The Hamirpur college not only ranked first within Category ‘A’ but also achieved the overall top rank across all categories.

Sangeeta Singh, the principal of the college, stated that this achievement brings both honour and increased responsibility to the faculty, ministerial staff, and students. She explained that the directorate evaluated colleges using multiple parameters, including academic performance, sports, cultural activities, research and analysis by faculty and students, faculty profiles, institutional management, and administration.

Principal Singh attributed the success to the contributions of past teachers and principals, who instilled discipline and a conducive culture while managing developmental funds effectively. She highlighted that the college particularly excelled in the criteria related to infrastructure for academic and sports activities, securing first rank in these aspects.

Established in 1965 as Government Degree College, Hamirpur, the institution has evolved into a leading higher learning centre in Himachal Pradesh with the objective of nurturing students into aware, responsible, and accountable citizens. In 1995, the college was renamed Netaji Subhash Chander Bose Memorial Government College. It holds recognition under Sections 2(f) and 12(B) of the University Grants Commission (UGC). Last year, the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) re-accredited the college with a ‘B’ grade, scoring 2.83 points.

The college offers a range of undergraduate programmes in Science (Medical, Non-Medical, Computer Science), Humanities, and Commerce, along with postgraduate courses in Hindi, Commerce, English, and Economics. Additionally, it provides self-financing courses such as Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA), Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Applications (PGDCA), Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA), and add-on courses in Tourism and Travel Management, Journalism, and Computer Applications.

The college campus spans 22 acres and includes extensive grounds for major outdoor sports, as well as facilities for indoor sports, a gymnasium, and four badminton courts. Modern amenities include a 400-meter synthetic track and an indoor stadium. For staff, there are 11 residential quarters, and separate hostels for boys and girls, each with a capacity for 100 students. The college also actively engages students through its National Service Scheme (NSS), National Cadet Corps (NCC), Rovers and Rangers, and Rotaract units.

Recently, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu inaugurated a new computer-based testing centre at the college, marking another significant development. Principal Singh also noted that the district’s high literacy rate contributed positively to the college’s ranking.
