Varanasi Skies Roar as PM Modi Witnesses IAF’s ‘Wings Over Ganges’ Air Show

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday attended the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) spectacular ‘Wings Over Ganges’ air show in Varanasi, witnessing premier display teams perform intricate aerial manoeuvres over the sacred River Ganga.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that the event, held at Namo Ghat, was part of the three-day commemoration of the IAF’s 94th anniversary. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel, and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath were present alongside Prime Minister Modi on the concluding day of the air show.

Donning a white Air Force cap and dark sunglasses, Prime Minister Modi observed for over an hour as the IAF’s advanced aircraft filled the skies above the ancient city. The air show featured displays by a range of fighter jets, including the Sukhoi-30 MKI, the indigenous Tejas, and the Light Combat Helicopter ‘Prachand’, alongside various helicopter formations.

According to officials from the Indian Air Force, a significant highlight of the show was the ‘Kashi formation’, where three Kiran trainer aircraft executed a synchronized V-formation, creating a vivid spectacle in the colours of the Indian tricolour that elicited enthusiastic cheers from the assembled crowd. During the ‘Omkar formation’, Mi-17 helicopters were observed flying with the National Flag prominently displayed, further enhancing the patriotic fervour of the event.

The air show showcased the comprehensive operational capabilities of the Indian Air Force, with fighter aircraft such as the Rafale, Sukhoi, Mirage 2000, Tejas, MiG-29, and Jaguar participating. Transport aircraft and various types of helicopters also contributed to the impressive display of military aviation prowess. The Surya Kiran aerobatic team demonstrated high-precision flying and expertly coordinated manoeuvres, while the Sarang helicopter display team captivated spectators with its daring aerial stunts.

The confluence of the serene Ganga River and its vibrant ghats provided a picturesque backdrop for the thunderous roars of the military aircraft. The sight of skilled Air Force personnel executing daring feats in the sky filled the atmosphere with excitement, leaving the spectators in awe of their expertise and courage. Many in the crowd waved the national flag and raised patriotic slogans, including ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ and ‘Vande Mataram’, which echoed across the venue.

For the residents of Kashi, the event was presented as more than just an air show; it offered a unique opportunity to witness the valour of the Indian Air Force and gain a close-up appreciation of the nation’s military strength. The Prime Minister’s presence at the event significantly amplified the enthusiasm among the local populace. Large numbers of people gathered along the route from the police lines to Namo Ghat to welcome Prime Minister Modi.

BJP workers and local residents greeted the Prime Minister with rose petals. Traditional musical performances and cultural programmes were organised at designated points along his route, including at the Police Lines main gate, Police Lines crossing, near Yes Bank on Khajuri-Maqbool Alam Road, Hukulganj Tirumuhani, Chowkaghat wood market, City Railway Station, Gol Gadda crossing, the railway underpass, and the CNG station near Namo Ghat. As the Prime Minister acknowledged the cheering crowds, standing on the footboard of his vehicle, slogans of ‘Har Har Mahadev’ and ‘Jai Shri Ram’ resonated through the area.

Spectators expressed a profound sense of pride in witnessing the air show in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Divakar Singh, an attendee, remarked on the event being a matter of immense pride for Varanasi. He described it as a memorable experience to watch the Indian Air Force’s air show at Namo Ghat with the Prime Minister, stating that the spiritual ambiance of Kashi, combined with the might of the fighter jets, instilled a deep sense of pride. He also suggested that such events could inspire children and young people to foster respect for the country and a spirit of national service.

Another spectator, Govind Pandey, noted that it was his first time witnessing an air show of such magnitude. He found the experience particularly memorable due to Prime Minister Modi, who represents Varanasi in Parliament, being present. Pandey also commented that such displays hold the potential to inspire young individuals to consider careers in the Air Force.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi inaugurated a new garment manufacturing unit of Arvind Ltd in the Mirzamurad area of Varanasi. Officials stated that this facility is intended to foster industrial development within the region and bolster India’s textile and garment manufacturing sector. During his visit to the unit, the Prime Minister also engaged with approximately 300 women workers. The new unit is anticipated to create significant employment opportunities, especially for women, and stimulate local economic activity. Furthermore, the initiative is expected to facilitate the connection of garments manufactured in Varanasi with international markets, thereby expanding global outreach.

Prime Minister Modi had arrived at Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport in Varanasi on Sunday morning. He proceeded by helicopter to Mirzamurad for the inauguration of the garment unit, before flying to the Police Lines. From there, he travelled by road to Namo Ghat to attend the ‘Wings Over Ganges’ air show.
