District police in Himachal Pradesh have apprehended a man from Amritsar, Punjab, carrying approximately 257 grams of a substance identified as ‘chitta,’ commonly known as heroin. This seizure represents one of the largest quantities of the contraband confiscated by the district police this year.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the operation was conducted by the Special Cell of the district police, who intercepted a taxi near Shoghi, a town located approximately 14 kilometers from Shimla, the state capital. During a routine check, officers discovered the illicit drugs in the possession of the arrested individual, identified as Resham Singh, aged 34, a resident of Amritsar.
Addressing a press conference, Additional Superintendent of Police, Shimla (City), Mehar Panwar, stated that Singh had been under surveillance for an extended period. She further elaborated that on Tuesday, Singh was apprehended while en route to Shimla with a commercial quantity of chitta, which he reportedly intended to distribute within the capital city and its adjacent regions. A case has been registered against the accused under Section 21 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, and an ongoing investigation is being conducted by the authorities.
In a separate but related operation, the district police have also arrested another significant drug trafficker hailing from Punjab for his alleged involvement in supplying chitta within Shimla. The second accused has been identified as Sukhpal Singh, 28, a resident of Maniana village in Sangrur district, Punjab.
Mehar Panwar further detailed that this second arrest stemmed from an earlier case where, on September 8, 2026, the police had apprehended Ankit, a resident of Kotkhai in Shimla, with 29 grams of chitta. Subsequent to Ankit’s arrest, the police initiated a thorough examination of his digital footprint, including call details, WhatsApp conversations, and Internet Protocol Detail Records (IPDRs). This digital forensic analysis reportedly revealed communications between Ankit and Sukhpal Singh pertaining to the procurement and distribution of chitta.
Based on these findings, a dedicated police team traveled to Punjab and successfully arrested Sukhpal Singh. He was subsequently brought back to Shimla for further questioning and legal proceedings. The police are continuing their efforts to ascertain the full extent of the drug network operating in the region and to identify all individuals involved in the trafficking of narcotics. The arrests highlight the persistent challenge posed by drug trafficking in the picturesque hill state, with authorities intensifying their efforts to curb the menace and ensure the safety of residents and tourists alike. The investigation aims to dismantle the supply chain and prosecute those responsible for introducing harmful substances into the community. The district police have emphasized their commitment to maintaining law and order and eradicating drug-related activities through rigorous enforcement and intelligence-led operations.
