ANNI, HIMACHAL PRADESH – Patients in the Anni subdivision of Kullu district and surrounding areas will soon have access to essential X-ray diagnostic services, as the Anni Civil Hospital has received a new X-ray machine, marking the end of a two-year-long wait.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the hospital’s previous X-ray apparatus had been defunct for approximately two years, failing completely in early 2024. This rendered the facility incapable of providing crucial diagnostic imaging, forcing residents to seek services at private facilities or travel to distant hospitals.
The new X-ray unit arrived at the Anni Civil Hospital three days ago. Officials stated that the concerned company is expected to complete the installation within the coming week. Once the machine is fully operational, it is anticipated that thousands of individuals from the Anni region, as well as from numerous panchayats in adjoining areas, including parts of Mandi district, will no longer need to travel for X-ray examinations.
The prolonged absence of functioning X-ray services at Anni Civil Hospital had been a significant concern for the local populace. The old machine had reportedly been suffering from persistent technical issues and had deteriorated significantly over time. Its final breakdown earlier this year exacerbated the situation, particularly as the X-ray machine at the nearby Nirmand hospital was also reported to be non-operational, a matter that has reportedly been under consideration by the Himachal Pradesh High Court.
Community members and hospital administration had been actively advocating for a new X-ray machine for an extended period. The hospital management had submitted multiple requests to the Directorate of Health Services in Shimla, detailing the critical need for the diagnostic equipment. Furthermore, local voluntary organisations had organised protests and sit-ins to exert pressure on the state government and the Health Department to expedite the provision of a new machine. Proposals for acquiring updated equipment were also formally passed during meetings of the Rogi Kalyan Samiti (Patient Welfare Committee).
Anni Civil Hospital serves as a primary healthcare facility not only for the residents of the Anni subdivision but also caters to patients from several villages and panchayats in the vicinity. The geographical remoteness of the area and the existing healthcare infrastructure challenges meant that the lack of X-ray facilities posed a substantial barrier to timely and accessible medical diagnostics.
With the installation and commissioning of the new X-ray machine imminent, hospital authorities expressed confidence that this development would resolve a long-standing problem and significantly improve the healthcare services available to the local population. The availability of in-house X-ray facilities is expected to reduce patient expenditure on travel and diagnostic tests, while also facilitating quicker medical assessments and treatment plans.
The absence of such basic diagnostic tools highlights the challenges faced by healthcare institutions in remote and hilly regions of Himachal Pradesh. The efforts of the local community and administration in persistently raising the issue have culminated in this positive outcome. The government’s response, though delayed, is seen as a crucial step towards strengthening healthcare infrastructure in underserved areas of the state.
The process of acquiring new medical equipment often involves bureaucratic procedures, budgetary allocations, and logistical challenges, especially for facilities located in remote mountain terrain. The consistent follow-up and advocacy by the stakeholders in Anni have been instrumental in bringing this essential service back to the hospital.
The return of X-ray services is expected to have a direct impact on the management of various medical conditions, including fractures, dislocations, and chest-related ailments, which commonly require diagnostic imaging. It will also support the hospital’s efforts in providing comprehensive primary healthcare to the population it serves.
