Chennai: Senior AIADMK leader and former Minister S.S. Vaigaichelvan has resigned from the party, citing dissatisfaction with the leadership’s functioning and alleging he had been sidelined. The resignation, announced on Friday, comes as the AIADMK continues to grapple with internal challenges following recent electoral setbacks.
Criticism of Party Leadership
In his resignation letter addressed to AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami, Vaigaichelvan expressed his deep-seated grievances. He lamented that a true leader prioritizes the party and its cadres even at personal cost, contrasting this with a leader who allegedly focuses on personal growth at the expense of the party’s well-being. Vaigaichelvan stated that he was forced to leave the party due to prevailing circumstances, hinting at a significant disconnect between his expectations and the current party direction.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that Vaigaichelvan had also alleged that the AIADMK had compromised its anti-DMK stance by considering an alliance with the DMK. He contended that such a move would cause the party to lose its distinct identity and stray from its path to victory. These remarks came shortly after the AIADMK Chief Whip denied any such alliance plans, dismissing such claims as misinformation.
Background and Political Career
Vaigaichelvan, an advocate and acclaimed Tamil scholar, has a long association with the AIADMK, having served the party since his student days. He was elected to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from Aruppukottai in 2011. During his tenure, he served as the AIADMK Chief Whip before being inducted into the State Cabinet as the Minister for School Education, Sports and Youth Welfare under former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa. He contested the 2021 and 2026 Assembly elections from Aruppukottai but was defeated in both instances.
Despite not being given a ticket to contest the 2026 elections, Vaigaichelvan stated that he had campaigned wholeheartedly for the party. He expressed that the neglect he experienced within the party organisation was more painful than death, quoting a Thirukkural couplet to emphasize his sentiment. He mentioned that the memories and experiences gained while serving the party in various capacities would remain with him, but the decision to resign had caused him immense mental anguish.

Vaigaichelvan’s resignation follows a series of recent political developments within Tamil Nadu’s political landscape. Several former AIADMK ministers and senior functionaries have recently joined the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
