The Union Territory of Ladakh has undergone a significant administrative overhaul with the creation of 17 new tehsils, more than doubling its existing number from 15 to 32. Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena has approved this expansion, which aims to decentralize governance and enhance accessibility of government services to citizens across the region.
The Chenab Times has learned that this administrative restructuring is designed to streamline the revenue administration framework. The reorganisation ensures that each revenue village is precisely mapped to a single tehsil, and each tehsil is uniformly placed under a single district. This move is intended to resolve long-standing administrative and jurisdictional ambiguities, fostering a more cohesive governance structure.
Following the administrative reshuffle, Leh district will now comprise five tehsils. Kargil district will have seven tehsils, while the newly defined administrative units will see Changthang with four tehsils, Nubra with six, Zanskar with four, Sham with five, and Drass with one tehsil. This distribution aims to balance administrative load and geographical considerations across the vast Union Territory.
Lieutenant Governor Saxena stated that the restructuring aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for a developed and prosperous Ladakh, particularly following its designation as a Union Territory in 2019. The expansion of the administrative apparatus is expected to bolster governance at the grassroots level. It is also anticipated to improve the efficiency of public service delivery and expedite the implementation of developmental programmes throughout Ladakh.
The creation of new tehsils is also projected to make government services more accessible for residents living in remote and border areas. By reducing the physical distances to administrative centers and improving coordination between district and tehsil-level authorities, the reform seeks to bridge the gap between the administration and the populace.
Officials indicated that the primary objective of this reorganisation is to establish a more efficient and citizen-centric revenue administration system. This enhanced system is expected to facilitate quicker resolution of public grievances and ensure more effective implementation of various welfare and development initiatives across the Union Territory.
