Coimbatore city police have concluded an intensive month-long operation targeting drug trafficking, resulting in the arrest of 273 individuals and the seizure of over 100 kilograms of ganja, alongside other illicit substances and contraband. The drive, which ran from July 8 to August 8, 2026, saw the registration of 215 cases, underscoring a significant crackdown on the drug trade within the city.
According to official data released by the police department, special raids and vehicle checks were a key component of the operation, aimed at curtailing the movement of contraband and eradicating illegal substances. Under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, police registered 62 cases and apprehended 103 offenders. The seizures included 107 kg of ganja, 2,321 painkiller tablets, 210 bottles of unknown narcotic drugs, and 5.55 grams of methamphetamine, along with ₹34,600 in cash. Furthermore, 23 vehicles, comprising three four-wheelers and 20 two-wheelers, identified as being used for smuggling, were confiscated.
The operation also targeted the illicit tobacco trade, with 109 cases filed under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA). This led to the arrest of 118 people and the recovery of 1,778 kg of banned tobacco products. Seizures in this category included a four-wheeler, three two-wheelers, and two autorickshaws implicated in these violations.
In parallel, the prohibition enforcement wing registered 44 cases, arresting 52 individuals and seizing 107.8 litres of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL), along with two two-wheelers. Senior police officials have issued a stern warning, stating that such special operations, raids, and strict vigilance will continue relentlessly to eliminate substance abuse and solidify Coimbatore’s status as a drug-free city.
This extensive operation is part of a broader, ongoing effort by the Coimbatore police to combat drug trafficking and abuse. Recent reports indicate a sustained focus on such activities, with previous drives yielding substantial seizures. For instance, in early July, a district-wide operation saw the seizure of approximately 20 kg of ganja and synthetic drugs, leading to the arrest of 10 persons and the registration of nine criminal cases. This operation was conducted under the supervision of the Superintendent of Police and targeted various vulnerable locations including college hostels and accommodations occupied by individuals from outside the district.
The success of these operations has also been noted by the impact on the availability and price of substances in the illegal market. Police sources have indicated that the intensified crackdown has led to a decrease in the availability of ganja in Coimbatore, consequently driving up its price. This suggests a tangible effect of the sustained enforcement measures on the local drug trade.
Furthermore, the Coimbatore City Police have also been actively involved in the rehabilitation of drug users. In the past month, approximately 100 drug users were assisted in seeking help from rehabilitation centers, with police identifying local centers and guiding willing individuals, often with the support of their families. This dual approach of law enforcement and rehabilitation aims to address both the supply and demand sides of the drug problem.
The police have also highlighted the importance of community involvement in combating drug addiction, urging family members and friends to be vigilant for behavioral changes in youngsters that might indicate drug use. The city police are also exploring collaborations with schools to conduct health camps, including dental checkups, to identify signs of addiction among students.
In their continued efforts against drug peddlers, authorities are employing stringent measures such as detention under the Goondas Act, freezing of bank accounts, and property attachment. These actions are part of a comprehensive strategy to dismantle drug trafficking networks and deter future criminal activity within the city.
