Kapurthala Police Register FIR After Video Shows Woman Beggar Assaulted Outside Temple

Kapurthala police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) and launched a manhunt for an accused man after a video depicting the assault of a woman beggar outside a historic temple in Kapurthala went viral on social media. The action was initiated following suo motu cognisance by the police and intervention from the Women’s Commission.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that the widely circulated video shows a man allegedly assaulting a woman who was sitting with children outside the gate of the Mata Shri Bhadrakali Temple. Despite interventions from bystanders attempting to halt the assault, the accused reportedly proceeded to kick the woman.

Sources indicated that the accused, identified as Vikas Sharma of Sheikhpur, operates a shop situated opposite the temple. Allegations suggest that Sharma became enraged after children accompanying the woman allegedly tampered with his motorcycle. This alleged provocation led to the subsequent assault on the woman. As of the report, the woman has not formally lodged a complaint with the police.

The incident gained official attention after the video was extensively shared across social media platforms. Both the Women’s Commission and the Human Rights Core Committee reportedly called for immediate action against the individual involved. This prompted the police to commence an investigation based on the visual evidence captured in the viral footage.

DSP Sub-Division Sheetal Singh confirmed that preliminary investigations had identified the man seen assaulting the woman in the video. Police teams are actively conducting raids in various locations in an effort to apprehend the accused, Sharma, and bring him before the judicial process. Further details regarding the investigation and any potential charges are expected to be released as the case progresses.
