New Delhi: The Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Belgium, H.E. Bart De Wever, is set to embark on a significant official visit to India from September 2 to 4, 2026. The visit, at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marks De Wever’s first trip to India since assuming office in February 2025 and aims to bolster bilateral ties across various sectors.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that Prime Minister De Wever will be accompanied by the Belgian Minister of Defence, H.E. Theo Francken, underscoring the importance of defence and security cooperation between the two nations. The delegation’s itinerary includes high-level discussions focused on strengthening the India-Belgium partnership and exploring avenues for enhanced cooperation.
A key event during the visit will be a bilateral meeting between Prime Minister De Wever and Prime Minister Modi on September 3. The discussions are expected to cover the full spectrum of bilateral relations, as well as regional and global issues of mutual interest. This meeting will provide a platform to deepen strategic dialogue and identify new areas for collaboration.
Furthermore, Prime Minister De Wever is scheduled to deliver a keynote address at an event organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). This engagement is particularly relevant in the context of the ongoing India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations, highlighting Belgium’s interest in boosting trade and investment with India.
Following his engagements in the capital, Prime Minister De Wever will travel to Mumbai. In India’s financial capital, he is expected to interact with various stakeholders, including those from the diamond, ports, and logistics sectors. Belgium has long-standing trade relationships with India, particularly in the diamond trade, and this segment of the visit is anticipated to reinforce these economic ties.
The visit is poised to offer a valuable opportunity to further solidify the India-Belgium partnership. Both nations aim to advance cooperation in critical areas such as trade and investment, defence and security, technology transfer, renewable energy development, and connectivity initiatives.
