In Tamil Nadu, several prominent leaders of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) have been booked by the police following separate complaints alleging derogatory remarks made during protests on September 12. Among those booked are DMK Deputy General Secretary and Nilgiris MP A. Raja, Harbour MLA and Chennai East District Secretary P.K. Sekarbabu, and Rishivandhiyam MLA Vasantham Karthikeyan.
The cases stem from protests held across the state on September 12, which were reportedly organized in condemnation of statements made by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay in the Assembly and remarks made by Law Minister C.T. Nirmal Kumar. According to reports, Sekarbabu faces charges registered at the B1 North Beach Police Station under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, including those corresponding to provisions of the erstwhile Indian Penal Code such as Sections 294, 504, 153A(1), and 505(1). The complaint alleges that Sekarbabu used abusive and derogatory expressions against Chief Minister Vijay and Minister Nirmal Kumar, and also made remarks concerning the Chief Minister’s response to the Karur incident where 41 people died.
Separately, A. Raja has been booked by Saidapet police based on a complaint alleging that he made insulting remarks about the mother of Minister Nirmal Kumar during a protest in Saidapet. The complaint was lodged by a lawyer named Karthik. Police have registered a case against Raja under seven sections of the BNS.
In Kallakurichi, MLA Vasantham Karthikeyan has also been booked by the local police over remarks allegedly made during a similar protest in the district on the same day. The complaints leading to these bookings were filed by individuals who reportedly heard the speeches delivered at these demonstrations.
Police officials stated that cases were registered based on complaints received, and investigations are underway. The legal proceedings are examining the content of the speeches, video recordings, and other available evidence. The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) provisions are forming the basis of the First Information Reports (FIRs) in these cases. The alleged incidents took place at various locations, including Chennai and Kallakurichi, during the DMK protests held on September 12.
