Union Home Minister Amit Shah emphasized the significance of learning native languages alongside Hindi while addressing graduating students at the Indian Institute of Teacher Education (IITE) convocation ceremony on Saturday.
Shah expressed support for the inclusion of English in the education system but highlighted the importance of children mastering their mother tongues in addition to Hindi. He underscored the need to safeguard India’s rich linguistic heritage and culture.
“Incorporating the wealth of knowledge present in Sanskrit, Upanishads, and Vedas is essential,” Shah remarked, urging students to explore the depth of these ancient texts.
The Union Minister underscored that his stance on English is not against acquiring knowledge from any source. He implored students to foster and bolster Indian languages, as they embody the nation’s historical context, literature, and grammatical structures.
“National Education Policy 2020 emphasizes teaching in mother tongues. I believe in learning French, German, and English, but it’s vital that a child from any region learns both their native language and Hindi. This unity in linguistic diversity will propel our nation’s progress,” Shah asserted.
IITE, founded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his tenure as Gujarat’s chief minister, aimed to bridge eastern and western educational ideologies, Shah shared.
Sanskrit’s prominence in the institute’s curriculum drew attention, with Shah encouraging students to enhance their understanding of the language. He noted that the Upanishads, Vedas, and Sanskrit offer an unparalleled repository of knowledge.
Shah drew inspiration from the Vedas, advocating for the acquisition of knowledge regardless of its origin and emphasizing its potential to benefit society and humanity.
Highlighting the evolving landscape of knowledge and science, Shah proposed unifying ancient Indian educational principles with modern dimensions, thereby creating a comprehensive educational framework.
“Education guides a child and leads them towards the right path,” Shah stated, addressing the graduates. A total of 2,927 students graduated from IITE during the ceremony.
Shah’s address resonated with the graduates, emphasizing the synthesis of tradition and progress, which, he believes, holds the key to nurturing a well-rounded education system.
