Senior IPS officer of J&K cadre Basant Rath was on Wednesday suspended by the Union Home Ministry for “gross misconduct and misbehaviour”.
Rath, a 2000 batch IPS officer, has been attached to Police Headquarters in Jammu and has been asked not to leave the headquarters without permission from the Director General of Jammu and Kashmir Police.
The order issued by the Home Ministry stated that disciplinary proceedings against Rath were “contemplated in connection with repeated instances of gross misconduct and misbehaviour, which have been brought to the notice of the Government”, according to The Tribune.
According to an order issued Tuesday by S.D. Sarkar, under-secretary to the Government of India, Rath was placed under suspension with immediate effect for “repeated instances of gross misconduct and misbehaviour”.
“It is further ordered that during the period that this order shall remain in force, the headquarters of Shri Basant Rath shall be Jammu, Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir and… Shri Basant Rath shall not leave the said headquarters without obtaining permission of DGP, Jammu and Kashmir Police,” the order stated, adding that Rath is eligible for a subsistence allowance and dearness allowance during the suspension period.
The order, a copy of which was seen, didn’t specify the duration of suspension, according to The Print.
“Suspension of services for Basant Rath by the authorities is a gross misuse of power & might over a decent,” says Asif Iqbal Butt a social worker from Chenab Valley.
