Vocational courses in Haryana’s government schools suffer from a lack of regular trained teachers, despite rising enrollment numbers. According to details received by The Chenab Times, guest trainers hired through private agencies often fail to maintain consistent attendance, leaving students without proper instruction.
Amar Ujala reported that vocational programs operate in 1,348 schools across the state during the 2025-26 session, with 195,777 students enrolled. This marks an increase from 189,349 students in 1,248 schools the previous year. The programs include trades such as healthcare and information technology. However, most schools do not have permanent vocational teachers on staff. The education department depends on external agencies for guest faculty, whose reliability remains inconsistent. Records show classes marked as conducted even when trainers absent themselves for extended periods.
Examples highlight the issue. At Moti Bagh Government Senior Secondary School in Thanesar, Kurukshetra, the healthcare trade trainer has not appeared for two months. In Sarai Khwaja School, Faridabad, the information technology trainer’s agency switched without prior notice, disrupting ongoing sessions. Such gaps contribute to frustration among students and parents, as vocational education aims to build practical skills for employment.
The broader teacher shortage in Haryana government schools compounds these challenges. A Times of India report from October 2025 noted nearly 30,000 vacant teaching positions out of 122,359 sanctioned posts statewide. This includes shortages in trained graduate teachers and post-graduate teachers, with vocational roles specifically targeted in recent recruitment drives. Hindustan Times reported in March 2025 that over 20,000 positions, including more than 8,500 for post-graduate teachers, remain unfilled. The state has deployed over 6,667 contractual teachers through the Haryana Kaushal Rozgar Nigam to address immediate needs, but unions demand permanent hires.
Government efforts include a major recruitment for over 15,000 teacher posts announced earlier in 2025, covering primary, trained graduate, and post-graduate levels, with vocational teachers in trades like IT and healthcare. The Haryana Public Service Commission handles selections, and applications opened in phases throughout the year. Education Minister Mahipal Dhanda stated in assembly sessions that promotions for headmasters and principals will fill over 1,200 leadership vacancies by the next academic year. A requisition for 4,780 post-graduate teacher posts, including vocational specialists, was sent to the commission in 2024, with recommendations for 1,672 appointments received.
