NEW DELHI: The government has removed Rahul Singh from the post of Chairman and Himanshu Gupta from the position of Secretary of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). The decision comes in the wake of allegations of irregularities within the digital evaluation system used for the Class 12 examinations.
The Chenab Times has learned that the move follows significant controversy that erupted after some Class 12 students reported discrepancies in their scanned answer sheets. These students alleged that the uploaded images of their marked answer sheets did not match their original handwriting, raising serious concerns about potential mismatches in the On-Screen Marking (OSM) system.
The Central Board of Secondary Education has been facing increasing scrutiny and criticism regarding the implementation of the OSM system in its examinations. The system has been associated with technical glitches, issues with payment processing for verification and re-evaluation services, and delays in processing requests. These challenges have led to growing demands from students, parents, and educational stakeholders for enhanced transparency and accountability in the examination and evaluation procedures.
Officials stated that the transfers of the Chairman and Secretary were necessitated by these concerns. The OSM system, introduced to streamline the evaluation process and improve efficiency, has apparently encountered significant operational hurdles. Students and parents have expressed dismay over the perceived lack of accuracy and the procedural difficulties encountered when seeking verification or re-evaluation of their examination papers.
The allegations suggest a potential systemic failure in the digital evaluation process, where the integrity of scanned answer sheets is paramount. The discrepancy between the original answer sheets and their digital reproductions has cast a shadow over the fairness and reliability of the examination results for the affected students. This has put considerable pressure on the CBSE to address the technical and administrative shortcomings that have been highlighted.
The government’s decision to transfer the top officials indicates a serious response to the widespread concerns about the examination process. The Ministry of Education is expected to undertake a thorough review of the OSM system and its implementation to prevent similar incidents in the future and to restore confidence in the board’s examination procedures. Further investigations into the alleged irregularities may follow to identify the root causes and implement corrective measures across the board.
The ongoing issues with the digital evaluation system also raise questions about the preparedness and efficacy of the technological infrastructure supporting national-level examinations. The CBSE is a crucial body overseeing examinations for a vast number of students across India, and maintaining the integrity and credibility of its processes is of utmost importance for the academic future of millions.
