The 13th edition of the Ladakh Marathon is set to witness an unprecedented prize purse of Rs 1 crore, signalling a significant expansion for one of the world’s highest-altitude endurance events. This enhancement has coincided with a record surge in participant registrations, approaching the 10,000 mark.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Vinai Kumar Saxena, officially launched the official jersey for the upcoming marathon, signalling the formal commencement of the event. The increased prize money is attributed to a commitment by the administration to foster sports and enhance youth engagement within the Union Territory.
The surge in registrations, representing a nearly 53 per cent increase from the previous year’s 6,521 participants, highlights the growing global appeal of the Ladakh Marathon among athletes. This rise is also expected to bolster Ladakh’s standing as a premier destination for adventure and endurance tourism.
During the jersey launch ceremony, Lieutenant Governor Saxena articulated that the marathon transcends mere athletic competition, embodying Ladakh’s inherent resilience, its rich cultural tapestry, and its unique natural environment. He underscored the event’s potential to offer local youth a significant platform to showcase their athletic prowess while simultaneously reinforcing Ladakh’s identity as a hub for adventure sports.
