Houthis Seize Strategic Red Sea Island, Tightening Grip on Vital Global Oil Route

Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels have seized a strategic island in the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a crucial waterway connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and a vital artery for global oil shipments. The capture of Mayyun Island, also known as Perim, marks a significant escalation in the conflict and further tightens the Houthis’ control over this critical maritime chokepoint.

The Houthi forces reportedly took control of Mayyun Island after government troops withdrew. This development follows a week-long offensive along the Yemeni coast, during which the rebels also captured the port city of Mocha. The Bab al-Mandab Strait, strategically positioned between Yemen and the African coast, is a key transit route for oil and goods traveling between Asia, Europe, and the Mediterranean via the Suez Canal.

The seizure of the island and surrounding coastal areas gives the Houthis increased leverage over maritime traffic. This move is seen as a direct threat to Saudi oil exports, as the kingdom has increasingly relied on the Red Sea route as an alternative to the Strait of Hormuz, which has seen heightened tensions and targeted attacks. The Houthi control of the Bab al-Mandab Strait, coupled with Iran’s influence over the Strait of Hormuz, could potentially give anti-Western forces significant leverage over global energy supplies.

In response to the Houthi advances, Saudi Arabia has conducted airstrikes targeting Houthi positions, including the airport in Mocha. However, these actions have so far failed to halt the Houthi momentum. The Yemeni government has condemned the Houthi actions and called for international support, warning of a potential return to full-scale civil war. The ongoing conflict in Yemen, which began in 2014, has already resulted in a severe humanitarian crisis, with hundreds of thousands of lives lost and many more displaced.

The international community is closely monitoring the situation, with concerns that the Houthi control of the Bab al-Mandab Strait could lead to further disruptions in global trade and energy markets. Oil prices have already seen an increase amid the escalating tensions in the region. While Houthi officials have stated that maritime navigation remains safe for all except Saudi vessels, independent analysts express concern about the unpredictability of the group’s actions.

The strategic importance of the Bab al-Mandab Strait cannot be overstated. Approximately 12% of the world’s trade volume passes through this narrow channel. Any disruption to this flow can have significant economic repercussions globally. The Houthis’ consolidation of control over this area deepens their strategic advantage and underscores the complex geopolitical dynamics at play in the broader Middle East conflict.

The offensive, which has resulted in hundreds of casualties and displaced tens of thousands of people, is part of renewed hostilities in Yemen’s civil war. The Houthis have previously carried out significant missile and drone attacks against Saudi Arabia, further escalating regional tensions. The international focus remains on containing the conflict and preventing a wider regional conflagration that could impact global energy security and exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in Yemen.
