The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is grappling with a devastating Ebola outbreak, with authorities intensifying efforts to contain the virus as confirmed cases surpass 6,000 and deaths approach 3,000. The outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo virus, has become the second largest on record globally and is spreading under extremely difficult conditions, exacerbated by insecurity, displacement, and a health worker strike.
The virus remains highly contagious after death, making safe and dignified burial practices a critical component of the response. However, these protocols have often met with resistance from communities, who adhere to traditional funeral rites that involve close contact with the deceased. This clash between public health measures and cultural practices has created significant friction and hampered containment efforts.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that a substantial percentage of deaths are occurring in communities, underscoring the urgent need for strict burial protocols and sufficient capacity for safe and dignified burials. In response, partners are scaling up safe and dignified burial teams, involving thousands of volunteers and civil protection personnel to rapidly respond to alerts and conduct burials. These teams are crucial in preventing further transmission and protecting communities.
The current outbreak began in mid-May 2026, and has since spread across six provinces: Haut-Uele, Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Bas-Uele, and Tshopo. Ituri province has emerged as the epicenter, accounting for the majority of cases and affected health zones. The rapid spread and geographic expansion over the past three months represent a substantial increase in the scale of the epidemic, according to the WHO.
The Bundibugyo strain of Ebola is particularly challenging as there is no approved vaccine or specific treatment for it, though research into promising candidates is ongoing. Existing treatments were certified for a different Ebola species, the Zaire ebolavirus, complicating response efforts. The DRC government has initiated an Ebola vaccination campaign targeting health and frontline workers, and a partnership aims to develop a Bundibugyo vaccine candidate.
The situation is further complicated by insecurity and high population movements, making disease surveillance and contact tracing difficult. In some instances, Ebola response teams have been attacked by armed groups while attempting to secure bodies for safe burial, forcing them to flee and highlighting the need for greater security to allow responders to operate without endangering their lives.
UNICEF has been actively involved in the response, working with partners to reinforce infection prevention in health facilities, schools, and communities. The organization also focuses on strengthening community health and surveillance, engaging local leaders to counter misinformation, and promoting early care-seeking and safe burials. UNICEF has mobilized significant supplies, including isolation tents, personal protective equipment, and decontamination kits, and is providing humanitarian cash transfers to affected households.
The outbreak has placed children at particular risk, with disruptions to health, nutrition, education, and protection systems. UNICEF is working to address the specific needs of children, including support for those separated from their caregivers and those who have lost loved ones, while also combating stigma and discrimination.
The World Health Organization declared the outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern in May 2026, emphasizing the need for accelerated action and sustained international solidarity. Despite the challenges, there have been encouraging developments, with over 1,300 people recovering from the virus. Improvements in technical equipment and diagnostics have also led to shorter hospital stays and expanded laboratory capacity, with multiple laboratories now capable of processing thousands of samples daily.
The ongoing efforts to contain the virus include not only medical interventions but also community engagement and psychosocial support for affected families. Local psychologists and experts are working to provide continuous support, sensitizing families about the disease and preventive measures. The scale-up of safe and dignified burial teams, involving community-based efforts alongside mobile teams, is seen as a critical pillar in controlling the epidemic by preventing transmission associated with infectious dead bodies. This multifaceted approach, combining medical response, community engagement, and cultural sensitivity, is essential to overcoming this devastating outbreak.
