Puducherry Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi has been removed. In her place, Telangana Governor Tamil Saundararajan has been given additional charge. Bedi was appointed as the Lieutenant Governor on 29 May 2016.
President Kovind’s office said Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan had been asked to take on Ms Bedi’s functions, in addition to her own, until a new appointment.
It is worth mentioning that a dispute was going on between Puducherry Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi and Puducherry Chief Minister V. Narayanaswamy. Narayanaswamy had recently submitted a memorandum to President Ram Nath Kovind, demanding the recall of Bedi. The removal of Kiran Bedi as Lieutenant-Governor of Puducherry is “a victory for the people”, Chief Minister V Narayanasamy told late Tuesday night, shortly after Rashtrapati Bhavan withdrew Ms Bedi from the post.
However, the Congress government of Puducherry has also come in a minority. After the resignation of another MLA from Puducherry, the Congress-led alliance has 14 MLAs in Samad. In such a situation, the Congress government has lost its majority in the assembly. However, Narayanaswamy claimed to have a majority. Elections are to be held in Puducherry in April-May.
