After receiving information about the occurrence of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) among livestock in various areas of the valley, the government of Jammu and Kashmir issued an advisory to the valley’s sheep farmers on Sunday.
In light of the outbreak of FMD, the Deputy Director Research, Disease Investigation Laboratory, Srinagar issued an advisory advising sheep farmers to follow several recommendations to protect their livestock.
Farmers should not be alarmed, according to the advisory, because FMD in sheep has a low mortality rate.
“Separate the sick animals from the animals that appear to be in good health. To prevent the spread of the disease, limit the movement of infected animals and prohibit them from grazing in public areas. The advisory recommends quarantining newly purchased animals for 14 days before introducing them to the herd.
Spray a 4 percent Sodium Bicarbonate solution around the farm premises every day to prevent it from spreading, according to the instructions.
“Feed the affected animals soft and palatable feed/fodder. At least once a day, wash/rinse the ulcerated vehicles found on the mouth, tongue, hoof, teat, and other areas with a 1% potassium permanganate solution, and apply boro-glycerine (1 part boric acid to 9 parts glycerin) to the mouth lesions.”
It went on to say that you should keep an eye out for any FMD signs or symptoms in your flock, such as high fever blisters, erosions on the mouth and feet, and lamness.
The sheep farmers were also advised to contact the block/concerned SEC’s veterinarian and follow his or her advice, according to the advisory.
