LG approves recruitment of 800 SIs in J&K Police

'In a historic recruitment reform, the SSB will now conduct selection processes for all non-gazetted level posts in the Police, Prisons, and Fire & Emergency Services departments.'

The proposal for the recruitment of 800 Sub Inspectors in the Jammu and Kashmir Police was approved by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Friday, providing a much-needed boost to a recruitment process that had slowed as a result of the ongoing Covid pandemic.

In a historic reform aimed at increasing transparency and fairness in the overall recruitment process, the Lieutenant Governor also approved the selection process for all non-gazetted level posts in all three departments, namely, the Police, Prisons, and Fire & Emergency Services departments, through the Services Selection Board (SSB), as part of the overall recruitment reform.

The written and physical tests will be used to determine who will be appointed to the positions. The SSB, in consultation with the Government, will establish a Committee for physical endurance testing, and the number of people who will be called for physical fitness testing will be determined in accordance with the pattern adopted by some states and union territories. Throughout the fitness test process, videotaping will be done as part of the process to ensure transparency.

Furthermore, in order to address the long-standing issues of seniority that have hampered the career progression of police officials at various levels, a common seniority of Sub Inspectors (SIs) recruited against Direct Recruitment vacancies in the Armed and Executive Wings, through a combined examination, will now be maintained in order to ensure smooth career progression of police officers at all levels.

Pertinently, the announcement of recruitment comes two days after the Lt Governor noted that the UT administration is moving ahead in direction of expediting the process for recruitment of the 25,000 promised jobs in the public sector/government departments to empower the youths of Jammu and Kashmir.

The Services Selection Board (SSB) has advertised approximately 18,000 positions for recruitment in various departments, and more positions are being identified on a continuing basis, according to the official.

According to the Lt Governor, the youth of Jammu and Kashmir have a critical role to play in advancing the overall development of the region. He further stated that the J&K government plans to reach out to 50,000 young people for financial assistance under the next phase of the Back to Village programme, the details of which will be finalised soon.

He stated that the Jammu and Kashmir Bank has so far advanced more than Rs 340 crores to 19,600 youth from across the UT, allowing them to pursue their dreams while also providing livelihood opportunities for others.
