The Taliban, the militant group that overthrew the Afghan government on Sunday, 15 August, extended reassurance of safety to a force of Hindu and Sikh people who were trapped in Afghanistan.
At the Karte Parwan Gurudwara in Kabul, some 300 Hindus and Sikhs are said to be seeking refuge.
“In Afghanistan, Hindus and Sikhs are terrified. They are unable to communicate with the embassy. I request that @DrSJaishankar ji make every effort to bring Hindu Sikhs who are taking refuge in Gurdwara Karte Parwan Sahib and staying in hotels near the Embassy (sic) back to India “In a tweet on Tuesday, August 17th, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, spokesperson for the Akali Dal and President of the Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee (DSGMC), said.
"In the wake of recent occurrences, 320+ individuals of minorities living at Ghazni and Jalalabad (including 50 Hindus and 270+ Sikhs) have taken refuge in Karte Parwan Gurdwara in Kabul, according to President, Gurdwara Committee of Kabul & Sangat. (emphasis added)," - Manjinder Singh Sirsa agrees.
“Taliban Leaders have met them and assured them of their safety. We are hopeful that Hindus & Sikhs would be able to live a safe/secure life despite political & military changes happening in Afghanistan (sic),” he said in another tweet on Monday.
MEA Assures Hindus and Sikhs of Aid External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar, who is stranded in Afghanistan, said on Tuesday, August 17 that he was constantly watching the situation in Kabul. He went on to say that he understands the fear felt by individuals who want to return to India.
“The biggest problem is airport operations. There are ongoing discussions with partners in this regard “On Tuesday, he stated in a tweet.
“We keep in touch with representatives from the Afghan, Sikh, and Hindu groups on a regular basis. Those who choose to leave Afghanistan would be able to return to India with ease “According to a statement made by the Ministry of External Affairs on Monday.
The MEA stated that it was waiting for flights to resume in order to resume the repatriation procedure.
