The Taliban believe that Osama bin Laden, the architect of the September 11 terrorist attacks on the United States, was not engaged in the strikes and that the Americans used it as an excuse to invade Afghanistan.
“Even after 20 years of war, there is no evidence of his (Osama bin Laden’s) involvement (in the September 11, 2001 attacks),” Taliban spokesman Zabibullah Mujahid told NBC News in an interview.
“There was no reason for this conflict; the Americans used it as a pretext to go to war,” Mujahid stated.
When asked if the Taliban can ensure that terrorist organisations such as al-Qaeda, who carried out the 9/11 attacks, will not find a safe haven in Afghanistan, a Taliban spokesperson stated that they have consistently promised that terrorism will not find a safe haven on Afghan land.
“When Laden became a problem for the Americans, he was in Afghanistan,” Zabibullah Mujahid claimed. But there was no proof of his involvement, and we’ve now vowed that no one will be prosecuted on Afghan soil.”
“We respect women, they are our sisters,” Mujahid remarked when asked about the women who live in dread of losing their rights under Taliban control. They have no reason to be terrified. The Taliban fought for the sake of the country. Women should be proud of us, not afraid of us.”
When asked about the thousands of Afghans fleeing the nation because of the Taliban dictatorship, Mujahid responded in the NBC interview, “We don’t want our people to flee the country.” We have forgiven them for whatever they’ve done in the past. For the country, we need our country people, the young and educated. It is, however, their choice whether or not to live.”
On August 15, Afghanistan was overrun by the Taliban, who swept through practically the whole country. Thousands of Afghans have attempted to exit the country since then and are camped outside the Kabul airport.
