Officials in Poonch district claimed on Monday that a police officer was detained for the murder of his 36-year-old wife.
According to them, the woman, a teacher by profession, was strangled by the policeman and his mother, and the body was dumped around 100 metres away from the apartment. On August 24, police found the body of the woman, Shanaz Akhter (teacher), at Keri Gulatta. While injury marks were apparent, authorities filed a case (FIR No. 91) at Police Station Gurasi under sections 302 and 109 of the Indian Penal Code and began an investigation.
The police then worked out the blind murder case of the woman, a mother of three daughters and a son, they claimed.
According to SDPO Mendhar Z A Jaffri, based on technical and other evidence, it has been determined that the woman’s husband, constable Mohammad Irfan Manhas, arrived home late at night and strangled his wife while she was sleeping. While Iran (attached to the IRP battalion in Batamaloo Srinagar) personally strangled the woman, his mother (deceased’s mother-in-law) grabbed her legs, according to the police officer. The son-mother combination attempted to destroy evidence after the murder, changing the victim woman’s clothes among other things before placing the body in the dead of night at a distance of around 100 metres from the residence, according to the officer. Following the murder, Mohammad Irfan Manhas (the policeman), the son of Mohammad Aslam (an ex-serviceman), drove to Srinagar in a truck to create the impression that he was still on duty, according to the officer.
“It was an organised crime, and the criminals tried to hide/remove all evidences,” a police officer said. “However, due to the sincere efforts of SHO Gursai Niaz Ahmed and the technical team of Dysp operation Poonch Manish Sharma, as well as timely guidance and supervision of SSP Poonch and DIGP R/P range Vivek Gupta, the blind murder case was solved within five days,” he added.
