During his meeting with newly appointed British Foreign Secretary Elizabeth Truss, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar pressed for a “early resolution” of the COVID-19 quarantine issue. The meeting between Jaishankar and Truss in Fresh York took place on the same day that the UK announced new COVID-related travel restrictions, which generated outrage and worry in India.
Jaishankar arrived in New York on Monday for the United Nations General Assembly’s 76th high-level session.
New rules for overseas travel in the United Kingdom
According to new regulations, Indian travellers who have received both doses of the Covishield vaccination from the Serum Institute of India (SII) would be considered unvaccinated and will be required to undertake a 10-day self-isolation period.
The present “traffic light system” of red, amber, and green countries based on COVID-19 risk levels will be replaced on October 4 by a single red list of countries.
India is not on the enlarged list of nations whose vaccines are recognised in the United Kingdom. It means that Indians who are vaccinated with Covishield, an Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine made by SII, will be subjected to mandatory PCR tests as well as self-isolation.
In the wake of criticism over the UK’s new travel requirements, the UK has announced it is in talks with India to see how it might broaden the acceptance of the COVID-19 vaccine certification granted by Indian officials.
