38-year-old Anand Giri, a priest at the Bade Hanuman Temple in Prayagraj who refers to himself as ‘yoga guru’ and ‘spiritual leader’, is known to live it up.
Even as Mahant Narendra Giri, the president of the Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad, was put to rest at Baghambari Math in Prayagraj on Wednesday, his student Anand Giri, who is now an accused in the former’s suspected suicide abetment, remained in the forefront.
Narendra Giri was found hanging in his Baghambari Math room two days ago. An alleged handwritten suicide note was also found, in which the seer blamed Anand Giri and two others for his death. After questioning them extensively, the Prayagraj police detained Anand Giri and Adhya Prasad Tiwari, another of Narendra Giri’s disciples, on Wednesday.
The Mahant also accused Anand Giri of misappropriating cash in the letter. The mahant is claimed to have removed Anand Giri from Niranjani akhara after charges that he broke the akhara’s customs by keeping in touch with his family.
Anand Giri, a 38-year-old priest at Prayagraj’s Bade Hanuman Temple who calls himself a “yoga guru” and “spiritual leader,” is known to party hard. After the Mahant’s death, images of him riding fancy cars and bikes and living a luxurious lifestyle in luxury hotels and on beaches began to circulate on social media, highlighting his non-ascetic lifestyle.
Anand Giri was detained by Sydney police in May 2019 and appeared in court in Australia in connection with two women’s complaints of inappropriate behaviour filed against him in 2016 and 2018. The court, however, later acquitted him.
