Lakhimpur Kheri Violence: Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi get nod to visit violence-hit UP district

The Uttar Pradesh administration gave Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, as well as three others, permission to meet the families of farmers slain in Lakhimpur Kheri on Wednesday.

The Uttar Pradesh administration gave Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, as well as three others, permission to meet the families of farmers slain in Lakhimpur Kheri on Wednesday. The state Home department stated, “The state government has granted permission to Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, and three other individuals to visit Lakhimpur Kheri.”

Rahul Gandhi has also been granted permission to travel to Sitapur, where his sister and AICC general secretary Priyanka Gandhi has been held since Monday. She was apprehended while on her way to pay respects to the relatives of farmers killed in the Lakhimpur Kheri massacre.

This comes after state minister Sidhharth Nath Singh stated that political figures will be permitted to visit Lakhimpur Kheri once the situation has been stabilised and the bodies of the deceased farmers have been burned. The state government has arrested, jailed, or blocked several opposition leaders in the previous two days for attempting to visit Lakhimpur Kheri, where violence erupted on Sunday, killing eight people, including four farmers.

Before leaving for Lucknow, Rahul said that the country is under “dictatorship,” with farmers being “systematically targeted” and politicians being barred from visiting Uttar Pradesh to meet families affected by the violence in Lakhimpur Kheri.

Gandhi said he will try to visit Lakhimpur Kheri alongside two Congress Chief Ministers, Bhupesh Baghel (Chhattisgarh) and Charanjit Singh Channi (Punjab), to meet with the families affected by the violence.

He also claimed that victims’ postmortems are not being performed properly, and that whatever one says is being suppressed.

In response to a query, Gandhi stated that the administration is unaware of the farmers’ power. “This is a systematic attack on the country’s agriculture. It is arrogance because the government does not recognise or appreciate the strength of the farmers, and as a result, they provoke, insult, and murder them. When asked what he thinks of the prime minister’s silence on the topic so far, he claimed, “This is a really hazardous and awful idea.”

Farmers were allegedly hit by vehicles driven by BJP members on their way to greet Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya to an event in the area, killing four of the eight people killed in Sunday’s violence in Lakhimpur Kheri. Protesters allegedly dragged BJP workers and their driver from their vehicles and lynched them. The Uttar Pradesh Police have filed a case against Ashish Mishra, the son of Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Mishra, but no arrests have been made so yet.
