Authorities say a Southern California man was slain by law enforcement officers on a busy freeway Monday after killing one person and shooting two relatives over the weekend.
Jesse Medrano, 35, was fatally shot in the Los Angeles suburb of Lynwood around 8:40 a.m. The California Highway Patrol hasn’t said much about the shooting.
The shooting happened on the Interstate 105 at the interchange with the Interstate 710 freeway, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. A spokeswoman for the Highway Patrol said the department received a call about a disabled vehicle on the interstate shortly before 7 a.m.
The vehicle’s licence plate was checked by a responding CHP officer, and it was found to be reported stolen.
Medrano’s information, which stated that he was wanted in connection with a homicide, was run by the deputy. Deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department arrived at the site before the shooting, according to the CHP.
According to Fox station KTTV, Medrano pulled out a handgun and opened fire on law enforcement personnel.
Officers retaliated by shooting the suspect. Medrano was rushed to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. A graze wound to the head from shrapnel was sustained by one CHP officer, who was treated on the scene.
The guy was seen on the road with what seemed to be a firearm, according to footage from a Fox Los Angeles chopper.
Medrano had been on the run since killing 61-year-old Ruben Marrufo during a family feud in South Los Angeles on Sunday, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
He is accused of killing Marrufo and shooting two others before fleeing in a car that was later abandoned. Authorities say he then carjacked another vehicle in a nearby area.
