Mehbooba Mufti, the president of the People’s Democratic Party, demanded that Meghalaya Governor Satya Pal Malik retract his alleged remarks that the former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister was a beneficiary of the now-defunct Roshni scheme, failing which legal action would be taken against him. “False & unsavoury utterances of Satya Pal Malik about me being a beneficiary of Roshni Act is highly mischievous. My legal team is preparing to sue him. He has the option to withdraw his comments, failing which I will pursue legal recourse,” Mehbooba said in a tweet.
Mehbooba posted a video in which Malik, the former Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, is seen allegedly alleging that National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah, his son Omar Abdullah, and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mufti have all received plots of property under the Roshni scheme.
The Farooq Abdullah government enacted the Roshni Act with the goal of awarding proprietary rights to tenants of state land in lieu of charges. The funds raised were intended to be used to build hydroelectric power plants in the former state.
The scheme, however, was disbanded when the Jammu and Kashmir High Court declared it unconstitutional and ordered the CBI to examine the scheme’s beneficiaries.
It has been discovered that the majority of the state land (about 28,500 hectares) was granted to the residents in the Jammu division, while only 6% (1,700 hectares) of the property was provided to the occupants in Kashmir.
