On edge of cliff: UNGA on climate change

United Nations, October 28

As world leaders gather in Glasgow for the crucial climate conference, president of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly Abdulla Shahid has warned that “on climate change, we are not only on the wrong track but on the edge of the cliff. He has underlined the need for a “final brave decision” to save humanity.

‘Moment of truth’

Brussels: The European Union’s chief executive called on Thursday for a show of climate leadership ahead of two major international meetings focused on curbing global warming, warning that world leaders face “a moment of truth”. “What we need is, first of all, leadership,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said before heading to a weekend summit of the Group of 20 most developed nations in Rome. The 26th UN Climate Change Conference, known as COP26, starts Sunday in Glasgow, Scotland. AP

Turkey’s 2nd largest Lake Tuz dries up

Lake Tuz, Turkey’s second-largest lake and home to several bird species, has entirely receded this year. Experts say Lake Tuz, spread over 1,665 square km, is a victim of climate change-induced drought, which has hit the region hard, and decades of harmful agricultural policies that have exhausted undergroundwater supply. The COP26 summit from October 31 will bring parties together to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

“My message is very short — we are not just on the wrong track. We are on the edge of the cliff,” Shahid said in an interview. He said nations had the science, technology and resources to combat climate change. Shahid, also the Foreign Minister of Maldives, expressed hope that after the COP26 Summit, “we will be able to come out with a much firmer commitment than we have now… My hope is that the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) will be much more firm and ambitious than they already are. And my hope is that from Glasgow all leaders collectively will give a message of hope”. Shahid will travel to the United Kingdom to attend the UN Conference on Climate Change, COP26, in Glasgow. — PTI
