UN panel defers Taliban?s plea for representation

Tribune News Service

New Delhi, December 2

The United Nations Credentials Committee on Wednesday failed to reach unanimity on giving representation to the Taliban and Myanmar’s military regime.

The committee chief and Sweden’s Permanent Representative Anna Karin Enestrom said after the closed-door meeting that it was decided “to defer its decision of the credentials”.

She said another meeting had not been scheduled and that the committee would send its report to the UN General Assembly. The Taliban had sought the ouster of the Ghani-era representative Ghulam Isaczai, who has bitterly criticised the new dispensation in Kabul.

However, there was no consensus on replacing him with Taliban’s Suhail Shaheen and also removing the Aung San Suu Kyi nominee Kyaw Moe Tun with Aung Thurein, the choice of the Myanmar regime.

Countries on the credentials committee are the US, Russia, China, Sweden, Bahamas, Bhutan, Chile, Namibia and Sierra Leone.
