New York, January 15
A man has been arrested and charged with hate crime for attacking an Indian-origin Sikh taxi driver at JFK International Airport on January 3.
As seen in a video, Mohamed Hassanain knocked off the turban of the Sikh driver, who is being identified only as Mr Singh out of respect for his request for privacy. Community-based civil and human rights organisation Sikh Coalition said the incident was being considered a hate crime, given Hassanain shouted “go back to your country” and called Singh “turbaned people” in a derogatory manner while repeatedly punching and shoving him. “I am thankful to law enforcement, Sikh Coalition, and all those in the community who have offered their strength in this difficult time,” Singh said in a statement to the rights organisation. —
