Many Muslim organisations in Karnataka have called for a state-wide shutdown today on March 17 in protest of the High Court’s judgement on the hijab. Ameer-E-Shariat Karnataka’s Maulana Sagir Ahmad Khan Rashadi has called for a bandh. Shariat is the state’s Muslim spokesman, and he has voiced disappointment with the court’s decision.
“I request all Muslims to listen carefully to the order read out here and to follow it strictly,” Rashadi stated in a video message. In response to the tragic judgement of the Karnataka High Court regarding hijab, there will be a complete bandh across the state of Karnataka on March 17 for the entire day.” He urged every member of the Muslim community to take part in the bandh.
The Supreme Court agreed on Wednesday to consider the petitions contesting the Karnataka High Court’s decision to deny the petitions seeking permission to wear hijab in the classroom, stating that it is not an essential religious practise in the Islamic religion.
While BJP and RSS have hailed the Supreme Court ruling, AIMIM chief Asasuddin Owaisi has expressed his displeasure over the judgment.
