On the night between Thursday and Friday, a 26-year-old man in Mangaluru, a coastal city in Karnataka, was arrested for reportedly flashing his private parts to women praying inside a masjid.
Sujith Shetty, a Karkala resident, has been named as the suspect. Around 2 a.m. on Friday night, the incident occurred at the Jumma Masjid in Mangaluru city, where the ‘Laylat al-Qadr’ programme was being held as part of the Ramzan observance.
The police Shetty entered the masjid and misbehaved with several women, attempting to take their hands in his. According to police officials, he even displayed his private parts to them and disturbed the programme.
A 24-year-old lady submitted the complaint against Shetty on Friday afternoon, after which Ullal police filed a case against him under sections 448, 354, 509, and 295 (a) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and took him into custody, according to Indian Express.
Shetty, works as a home guard with the local police department and was suspended after a few women complained of misbehaviour. “He has a history of misbehaving with women. Previously, some women complained after he forced them to take selfies with him and was holding them in an inappropriate manner. After he was suspended, eight days ago, he started working at a bar in Mangaluru city. On the day of the masjid incident, after his work time, he consumed alcohol and reached the masjid,” said a police officer who is a part of the investigating team.
“People had taken his photo and informed the police about the incident. Next day we arrested him from his home,” the officer added.
