A big tragedy could have occurred because the same SIM cards may have concluded up in the hands of anti-national and criminal elements, but Doda police in Jammu and Kashmir have exposed a racket of selling SIM cards by sellers on fake verification.
According to Doda Police, a SIM card vendor named Zaffer Hussain @ Jaffer Hussain S/o Noor Mohammad Matoo R/o Dudwar Tehsil Gandoh used to deceive both the administration and the general public by issuing SIM cards under false names, putting the innocent people whose names were used in danger if the SIM was later used to further anti-national or other criminal activities.
Doda Police told The Chenab Times, the entire racket was carried out via the Chief Electoral Officer J&K’s official website, ceojk.nic.in, in which first they would go to the website, open it, copy and paste a CQR number along with the voter’s name, address, and parentage, and then fill this information in a fake electoral card. Next, they would use the app, Adobe Photoshop, to print the customer’s photo into it, creating a new electoral card with the customer’s name and address remaining the same but having a photograph of another person beside them.
The police claimed that Mohammad Tayab S/o Mohammad Iqbal R/o Gandoh and the aforementioned SIM card vendor had been operating the racket for a considerable amount of time.
It was found during the initial investigation that the vendor had issued nearly (39) fake SIM cards to various people, and it is anticipated that this number will rise in the coming days as the investigation continues and more detailed information about the SIM cards issued by the vendor is forwarded to the police. At Police Station Gandoh, a case FIR No. 45/2022 U/S 420/467/468/120B IPC has been filed in this regard.
The Doda police stated that it would not be an exaggeration to say that a large number of fake SIMs have been issued to both netizens and outsiders by such vendors across the District which may prove fatal for security as well as law and order of the District. It may also support in carrying out the cunning plans of anti-national elements. To find these merchants around the District, however, a process has already been started in order to quickly bring them to justice.
