Two-week long summer school on “Computer Vision” concludes at Bhaderwah Campus

The two-week summer school on computer vision (under the KARYASHALA Scheme-A SERB initiative) was funded by the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, under the Accelerate Vigyan Scheme, and organised by the Department of Computer Science and IT, Bhaderwah Campus, University of Jammu, concluded here today.

At the Summer School, 40 applicants from various institutions in India, including IIT, Mandi, CSIR Lab, Chandigarh, MRSTU, Bathinda, IIIT Nagpur, Delhi University, PES Bangalore, NIT Kurukshetra, GCW Parade Jammu, and offsite campus of the University of Jammu had applied and, after screening, 18 students had been shortlisted for the course.

In addition to that, a 4-week internship on Digital Image Processing and Data Modelling Tools for Healthcare/Satellite Imagery is also running from July 4-22-29, July 22, in which 13 participants have applied and a maximum of 5 participants were allowed to join as per DST. In this 4-week internship, 5 researchers from LPU, BGSB University Rajouri, CSIR Lab Chandigarh, and IIIT Nagpur have joined the course, and they will be working under Dr Ashok Sharma for the entire duration.

This is the first time that DTS SERB has approved these courses for PG/PhD students under State University Faculty in any state university in Jammu and Kashmir.

In the Summer School and Internship, participants worked on various tools like Rapid Miner, Weka, Orange, Tableau, PyCharm and learned how real world problems can be mapped and solved using artificial intelligence based approaches.

Prof Umesh Rai, Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu, extended his best wishes on the occasion to the organisers.

At the event, Dr Ashok Sharma, Assistant Professor, was the main resource person. He delivered 40 sessions on various tools for research and various opportunities for researchers at national and international level. Dr. Ashok also attended a session on project proposal writing for DST, Book Chapter, Patent, and copyright filling.

Dr Sandeep from Cardiff Metropolitan University, UK; Dr Om Jee from IIT, BHU; Dr Shashi from IIT Ropar; Dr Dharmendra from VIT Vellore; Dr Karan Nathwani from IIT, Jammu; Prof Sachin from LPU; and Mr. Cheering from the University of Jammu have also delivered sessions on various topics related to the theme of the summer school.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Ashok Sharma apprised the gathering about the tools covered and assignments completed by participants, which included book chapter writing, patent writing, and data. Shivam, Ms Shivani, Mr. Usamn, and Ms Shiwalika from various universities provided feedback.

Dr. Ashok Sharma expressed his heartfelt gratitude to all staff members, technical staff, and various office staff members for their generous assistance in ensuring the successful completion of summer school.He also extended his thanks to Prof Rahul Gupta, Rector of Bhaderwah Campus, Dr Jatinder Manhas (Head) Computer Science, Mr. Mujeeb Sheikh AR, Dr Abid Sarwar, Ms Bablu Sharma, Dr Neeraj, Mr. Ajay, and Mr. Waseem for their support in organising the event.

On the occasion, Chief Guest Sh. SK Varshney, Scientist, Department of Science and Technology, and Head, International Cooperation Division, Government of India, delivered a speech on various initiatives undertaken by the Government of India at the National and International Divisions.

Prof Rahul Gupta, Rector of Bhaderwah Campus, in his address also appreciated the effort of Dr Ashok Sharma for organising the two-week summer school sponsored by SERB, New Delhi.

Dr. Jatinder Manhas extended his thanks to all staff and faculty members for their cooperation in the successful completion of the summer school.
