In a list issued by the government, which shows Jammu and Kashmir tops in deaths due to police encounters while Uttar Pradesh tops in custodial deaths.
As per reports reached by The Chenab Times, Jammu and Kashmir had 45 deaths due to police encounters in the years 2021-22, out of a total of 151 deaths across India. In the years 2020–21, Jammu and Kashmir had 5 deaths due to police encounters out of a total of 82 across India.
In another list of custodial deaths, Uttar Pradesh leads the number of custodial deaths with 501 deaths out of 2544 deaths across India in the year 2021-22. While the same state had 451 custodial deaths out of 1940 total deaths across India in the year 2020–21.
The statements from the government were showing the state-wise number of cases registered in respect to deaths due to police encounters and custodial deaths.
