In another warning for the Chenab region, which is vulnerable and prone to cloudbursts and earthquakes, an expert said that cloudbursts will definitely hit huge bodies of water like dams in this region which may result in huge destruction and life loss.
The valley is vulnerable to cloudbursts due to its sensitive topography, which includes steep mountains and deep gorges. Before entering Pakistan, the river Chenab flows through the Chenab Valley, which is home to towns including Kishtwar, Thathri, Doda, etc.
Experts believe that adding a considerable amount of water in the form of dams between these ridges is a tragedy waiting to happen since flash floods caused by cloudbursts could destroy the dams and obliterate the entire population downstream.
“No study has been conducted so far. But as a geologist, I understand there is a relationship between these mountains and gorges. These deep valleys and high mountains are already vulnerable and prone to cloudbursts. If there’s a huge body of water in between, it will definitely hit [the dams],” GM Bhat, a geologist at Jammu University, told NewsClick.
“The government’s top priority should be the safety of the people who live downstream of these dams,” Bhat added. There should be a prepared warning system in case an accident occurs or is predicted to do so in the future.
Bhat reveals that the region is extremely susceptible to earthquakes and that uncontrolled construction is simply escalating the problem. “No warning is given before an earthquake occurs. What will happen if an earthquake of greater magnitude occurs? The entire Jammu and Kashmir region is anticipated to experience an earthquake measuring roughly 8.4″, he said.
What will happen to the thousands of residents that live on both sides, starting in Ramban and continuing all the way down to Kishtwar and Pakistan? Bhat questioned. Therefore, we must plan to protect the locals. If any of these dams failed, there should be a plan regarding the water level. What should the downstream water level be? “
In the past, cloudbursts in different areas of the Chenab Valley caused extensive damage, resulting in the loss of life and property, and incited panic in the vicinity.
