The Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation has banned citizens from owning the ferocious Pit Bull, Rottweiler, and Dogo Argentino breeds as pets due to a string of pet dog attacks.
The civic body issued a number of other rules for pet owners on Saturday, including the requirement that they obtain a dog licence, which will be granted starting in November, and the restriction that no family may own more than one pet dog.
When putting their dogs outside in high-rise complexes, pet owners must utilise service lifts and make sure the animals are muzzled.
The decision was made in response to a number of dog bite incidences that have recently been recorded in the city’s various areas. The pet-owners will have to obtain registration within two months.
“Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, and Dogo Argentinos are three ferocious (khoonkhar) breeds, and keeping these dogs is not permitted. No permit will be given out. Someone will be accountable if they purchase one of these. In Ghaziabad, these three species are all banned,” said Sanjay Singh, a BJP leader and GMC council member, according to PTI on Sunday.
Singh had proposed a ban on these breeds, which the local body House approved.
He stated that owners of these types of dogs would need to sterilise them within two months. Asha Sharma, the mayor, said to PTI, “At the civic organization’s board meeting on Saturday, sterilisation of dogs was deemed to be mandatory. Registration of certificates won’t be allowed without sterilising.” The owner must provide an affidavit stating that they will have the dog sterilised when he reaches the age of six months if the dog is younger than that. The mayor stated that although dog owners love their pets, they also need to consider the children who have suffered serious injuries as a result of dog attacks.
“More than 10 children suffered dog bites. A child in the Sa njay Nagar colony, Kush Tyagi, was attacked by a Pit Bull and he got 150 stitches on his face. Four days later, another boy was attacked by a dog of this breed,” she said.
All GMC zonal officers have been given instructions to notify pet owners of the rules and regulations adopted at the board meeting.
Mayor Sharma said that locals would be able to feed stray dogs in a specified area.
If the Residents’ Welfare Association (RWA) files a complaint, the Ghaziabad Nagar Nigam (GNN) will fine dog owners, she said.
Pitbull and rottweiler breeds of dogs were previously banned as pets inside municipal limits by the Kanpur Municipal Corporation (KMC) and Panchkula Municipal Corporation.
