The Border Security Force (BSF) and the Punjab Police collaborated in an operation and seized 22 kg of pure-grade heroin, along with two foreign-made pistols, six magazines and 242 rounds of ammunition. The Pakistani smugglers were involved in a gunfight with the authorities along the International Border in Gurdaspur’s Dera Baba Nanak in the early hours of the day.
The BSF DIG, Prabhakar Joshi, estimated the value of the heroin to be about Rs 120 crore. This is the largest consignment of dope seized in recent years from the area. Narco-terrorism has been a persistent issue in the area, with officials discovering that weapons were also making their way into India along with drugs.
Officials have been trying to identify the recipients of the consignment, which is the third incident of its kind in the same area in the past few months. The incident occurred near the 42nd border pillar of the BSF, and a combing operation was underway to locate any other suspects in the area.
The smugglers tried to push in the consignment through a PVC pipe around 5.20 am. A thick blanket of fog had enveloped the area, reducing visibility to a few feet. There was an exchange of fire, but the Pakistani smugglers managed to escape taking advantage of the fog.
SSP Ashwini Gotyal and BSF officials have said that the combing operation will continue till late in the evening, as the tract of agricultural land is quite large. The joint operation between the BSF and the Punjab Police highlights the need for continued vigilance and cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking and narco-terrorism in the region.
