A woman in Gurugram, identified as Munmun Majhi, locked herself and her 10-year-old son in her house for three years due to fear of losing her son to Covid. The woman, who suffered from psychological issues, was rescued on February 22 by a joint team of Gurugram police, health officials, and a local NGO.
According to ASI Praveen Kumar, who led the rescue operation, the woman had even shut her husband out when he stepped out once during the lockdown in 2020, and they had been in touch over video call ever since. After being turned away from many places, the husband approached ASI Praveen Kumar on February 17 for help.
Upon speaking with Munmun on video call, Kumar was shocked to see the filth and dirt around the house and the condition of the child, who was his son’s age. Despite his initial suspicion of a feud between the husband and wife, Kumar soon realized the gravity of the situation.
The woman and her son have not seen the sun for the past three years, and she did not even use cooking gas and storage water during this time out of fear of Covid. They have now been admitted to the Civil Hospital for medical attention, and both have been referred to the psychiatric ward at PGI, Rohtak, for treatment.
Dr. Virender Yadav, Civil Surgeon of Gurugram, stated that the woman has some psychological issues that need to be addressed. The husband had been paying the rent, clearing the electricity bills, depositing their son’s school fees, and buying groceries and vegetables, leaving them outside the main door of the house.
The rescue team has brought this heart-wrenching incident to the public’s attention, shedding light on the impact of the pandemic on people’s mental health. It is a reminder to everyone that mental health is just as important as physical health, and that there is a need to be more aware and supportive of those struggling with mental health issues.
