Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) Chairman and former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Ghulam Nabi Azad has promised to bring back the Roshni Act Scheme if voted to power in the upcoming elections. The Roshni Act Scheme had provided land to thousands of poor people across the state, but it was scrapped by the present dispensation, which retrieved the land from the beneficiaries and rendered thousands of families homeless overnight.
Azad made this announcement while addressing a gathering of thousands of people at Larnoo, Kokernag. He also spoke about the prevailing fear and anxiety among the common masses in Jammu and Kashmir, saying that he wants to remove it from their faces and minds. He promised to ensure that no person is harassed and that everyone can live a dignified and peaceful life.
Azad further added that he aims to build Jammu and Kashmir as a welfare state where the economy of people grows to an extent that they are willing to pay taxes themselves. He criticized the government’s forcible imposition of taxes on people amid dwindling economic opportunities and promised to fight anti-people policies on the ground.
Thousands of people attended the rally and pledged to support the DPAP’s pro-people agenda. The party also welcomed prominent political leader from the ST community Chowdary Haroon Khatana, who joined the DPAP during the event.
Azad’s announcement to bring back the Roshni Act Scheme has generated a lot of interest among the people, especially the poor and marginalized sections of society who were the beneficiaries of the scheme. It remains to be seen whether his promises will translate into votes in the upcoming elections.
