Lovepreet Singh, an aide to radical preacher Amritpal Singh, who was accused of kidnapping, walked free from jail on Friday after a court in Ajnala ordered his release. The decision came after police submitted evidence to the court proving Lovepreet’s innocence in the alleged kidnapping case.
The release of Lovepreet Singh came just a day after Amritpal Singh’s supporters, armed with swords and guns, stormed the Ajnala police station, demanding the release of his aide. The clash resulted in injuries to three policemen.
Amritpal Singh, who heads the organization ‘Waris Punjab De’, had earlier issued an ultimatum for the release of Lovepreet Singh, and threatened to escalate the situation if his demands were not met.
The kidnapping case involved the abduction and brutal thrashing of Barinder Singh, a resident of Chamkaur Sahib in Rupnagar district. Singh had filed a complaint with the police alleging that Amritpal’s associates had kidnapped him from Ajnala and taken him to an unidentified location where he was beaten.
The police had initially arrested Lovepreet Singh in connection with the case. However, after Amritpal Singh’s supporters submitted evidence proving his innocence, the court ordered his release.
The incident had created a tense situation in Ajnala, with tight security measures being put in place. The police station and the town of Ajnala remained under heavy security throughout Friday.
The release of Lovepreet Singh has eased tensions in the area, and the situation is now reported to be peaceful.
