The Jammu and Kashmir government has formed a committee to suggest remedial measures for preventing environmental damage caused by land subsidence in District Doda. The order to form the committee was issued by the General Administration Department on March 24, 2023, in response to an Hon’ble NGT Order dated February 17, 2023.
According to the order, a copy of which lies with The Chenab Times, the committee will comprise the Chief Secretary, the Principal Secretary to the Government, and representatives from the Forest, Ecology & Environment Department, the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, the Govind Ballabh Pant National Institute of Himalaya and Environment, the National Institute of Hydrology, the Space Application Centre, the National Institute of Rock Mechanics, and the Central Pollution Control Board.
The committee’s terms of reference include suggesting remedial measures to prevent environmental damage in light of carrying capacity, hydro-geology studies, geo-morphological studies, and other allied and incidental issues. The committee will also be at liberty to take assistance from any other expert/institution and will be free to interact with stakeholders, including the inhabitants/members of civil societies, and consider concerns raised in media reports.
The committee is expected to complete its studies within two months and submit its report to Hon’ble NGT by e-mail on or before May 15, 2023. The committee will be serviced by the Department of Forest, Ecology & Environment.
The government order has been copied to various officials and departments, including the Principal Secretary to Government, Forest, Ecology & Environment Department, the Director of Archives, Archaeology and Museums, J&K, and the Private Secretary to the Chief Secretary, J&K. The order will also be available in Hindi and Urdu versions.
