Uyghur Muslims in China face worst form of Islamophobia while international attention diverted

The Uyghur Muslims in China are facing the worst kind of Islamophobia, as reported by Directus, a Greek news and media website. The Chinese government is imposing severe restrictions on the Uyghur Muslims, including discouraging them from observing Islamic practices such as fasting during the holy month of Ramadan, eating halal meat, and giving children Islamic names. The government is also forcing the Muslims to unlearn Islam, which has led to the de-Islamisation of Xinjiang.

Furthermore, the Chinese government is identifying one and a half million Muslims in Xinjiang as terrorists, and they are being forced into camps. The United Nations has been manipulated into declaring March 15 as anti-Islamophobia day, which will shift the attention away from the human rights violations of the Uyghur Muslims in Xinjiang. The declaration of anti-Islamophobia day will have two significant effects, as reported by Directus.

Firstly, every year, there will be violent agitations in countries like Pakistan, targeting western countries accused of desecration of the Quran, printing sketches of Prophet Mohammad, or writing against Islam. These agitations will generate hate and encourage terrorism, diverting attention away from human rights violations in China. Secondly, the agitations will not die down in just a day, and they will go on for a long time.

Pakistan, an Islamic country, has led 68 countries at the 51st session of the United Nations Human Rights Council opposing what they call interference in China’s internal affairs under the pretext of human rights. They said Xinjiang, Hong Kong, and Tibet were China’s internal affairs, and there should be no politicisation of human rights and double standards. However, it is doubtful if the OIC made an honest study of Islamophobia.

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) countries have not seen worse than Islamophobia happening in camps of Xinjiang where one and a half million Muslims are being forced to unlearn Islam. The Chinese call these Muslims terrorists, and OIC members believe all that, according to Directus.

Xinjiang: A Laboratory for De-Islamisation

A careful study of China’s impositions on Uyghur Muslims creates suspicion that Xinjiang is being used as a laboratory for de-Islamisation. The Chinese Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of China to the UN Chen Xu thanked his Pakistani counterpart Khaib-ur-Rehman Hashmi and requested him to cosponsor a joint statement again during the 52nd session of the council.

China wanted the joint statement to say that all human rights should be treated with equal emphasis, with sufficient importance attached to economic, social and cultural rights, and the right to development in particular. However, Pakistan ignored the basic cause of rights violation, which is the Uyghur Muslims’ insistence on living in accordance with their faith (Islam).

Conclusion

The Uyghur Muslims in China are facing the worst kind of Islamophobia, and the world needs to take notice of their plight. The United Nations should not be manipulated into declaring anti-Islamophobia day, which diverts attention from human rights violations in Xinjiang. The OIC should make an honest study of Islamophobia and condemn the Chinese government’s actions against the Uyghur Muslims. The world needs to act fast to stop the de-Islamisation of Xinjiang and ensure that the Uyghur Muslims can practice their religion freely.
