At least 21 people have lost their lives and many more are feared dead after a boat capsized off the coastal town of Tanur in the southern Indian state of Kerala. The incident occurred on Sunday evening when the boat, which was carrying approximately 40 passengers, overturned due to overcrowding.
According to Abdul Nazar, Malappuram district’s junior superintendent of police, around 10 passengers are currently receiving medical treatment in various hospitals, while many others were sent back after receiving first aid. It remains unclear exactly how many more people may have died in the incident.
Kerala’s minister for fisheries and harbour development, V. Abdurahiman, has warned that the death toll is likely to rise as the boat is still stuck in muddy waters and efforts to rescue those trapped inside continue. A team from the National Disaster Response Force has been deployed to the site to provide assistance.
Expressing his condolences, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a tweet that he was “pained by the loss of lives due to the boat mishap in Malappuram, Kerala.”
