In a significant development, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) apprehended a member of the notorious terrorist organization Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) for his role in a terror conspiracy case in Jammu and Kashmir. The arrest, which occurred on Sunday, is part of NIA’s relentless efforts to dismantle the nefarious plans devised by banned terrorist outfits operating from across the border, aiming to destabilize India through acts of terrorism in the state.
According to an official statement issued by the NIA and received by Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the accused has been identified as Mohd Ubaid Malik from the Kupwara district. The investigations conducted by the NIA have revealed that Malik maintained constant communication with a JeM Commander based in Pakistan, exchanging sensitive information, particularly concerning the movements of security forces and troops.
“Based on our findings, it has come to light that the accused was divulging classified intelligence, specifically related to the deployment of forces, to the Pakistani-based Commander,” the statement reads.
The NIA further reported the recovery of several incriminating documents from Malik’s possession, which exposed his active involvement in promoting and facilitating terrorist activities within Jammu and Kashmir. The agency had initiated the case, registered as RC -05/2022/NIA/JMU, on June 21, 2022, after observing suspicious activities related to the conspiracies orchestrated by members and Over Ground Workers (OGWs) associated with various proscribed terrorist organizations. These groups collaborated closely with their Commanders based in Pakistan, engaging in illicit activities such as trafficking narcotics, circulating large amounts of cash, smuggling weapons, and manufacturing Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), including remote-controlled sticky bombs and magnetic bombs.
As per the NIA’s investigations, the IEDs and explosives are frequently transported via drones and are also assembled locally, indicating a disturbing trend in the region. These deadly devices are intended to carry out targeted attacks against minority communities and security personnel in Jammu and Kashmir. The conspirators employ both physical and cyberspace platforms, particularly encrypted social media applications, to plan their operations, with the overarching aim of instigating unrest, disturbing communal harmony, perpetrating acts of terror, and waging a war against the Government of India.
