Surat’s Yoga Day Event Makes History with “New Guinness World Record” for Largest Gathering: Harsh Sanghavi

In a momentous achievement, the Yoga Day event held in Surat has etched its name in the annals of history by setting a new Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of people participating in a yoga session at a single venue. Over one lakh enthusiastic participants congregated to practice yoga and surpassed the previous record, as declared by Gujarat Minister of State for Home, Harsh Sanghavi.

The state-level ‘International Day of Yoga’ celebration in Surat’s Dumas area saw an impressive turnout, with Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel gracing the occasion alongside numerous ministers, MLAs, Members of Parliament, and officials. The event served as a testament to the immense popularity of yoga, a discipline that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has played a pivotal role in promoting globally.

Highlighting the significance of yoga, Chief Minister Patel emphasized its positive impact on individuals, particularly during the challenging times of the coronavirus pandemic. He stated, “We witnessed how yoga and pranayam helped people during the coronavirus pandemic.” Patel further lauded the remarkable participation, revealing that a staggering 1.25 crore individuals had taken part in the Yoga Day celebrations at 72,000 venues across the state.

“The Yoga Day event in Surat has set a new Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of people for a yoga session at one place,” announced Minister Harsh Sanghavi, applauding the collective achievement.

In his address, Chief Minister Patel revealed the government’s commitment to promoting yoga by announcing the opening of 21 ‘Yog Studios’ in the near future. He highlighted the efforts of the state Yog Board, which has successfully trained 5,000 instructors so far. With the establishment of these Yoga Studios, the government aims to further popularize yoga across Gujarat.

As part of the grand celebrations to commemorate International Yoga Day and India’s 75th year of independence, the government selected 75 “iconic places” in the state to host Yoga Day events. These locations included the renowned Sabarmati Riverfront in Ahmedabad, the majestic Statue of Unity in Kevadia, the ethereal White Rann of Kutch, and the awe-inspiring Modhera Sun Temple, among others.

The Yoga Day festivities were not confined to specific urban areas but were embraced by various villages, towns, cities, colleges, schools, health centres, police headquarters, jails, and public spaces such as gardens throughout the state. This widespread participation showcased the immense enthusiasm and commitment of the people of Gujarat toward the practice of yoga.

With the record-breaking gathering in Surat and the overwhelming response from millions of individuals across the state, the International Day of Yoga in Gujarat has exemplified the power of yoga in unifying communities and fostering physical and mental well-being. The historic achievement of setting a new Guinness World Record will serve as an inspiration to yoga enthusiasts worldwide, further bolstering the stature of this ancient practice.
