Tragic Turn of Events: Youth Succumbs to Injuries after Sister’s Heroic Sacrifice in Bandipora

In a heart-wrenching incident that unfolded on Sunday afternoon, a 21-year-old youth from Bandipora lost his life, just hours after his sister drowned while saving him from the treacherous waters of the Jhelum river. The young man, identified as Nazakat Ali, had been battling for his life at a hospital in Srinagar but tragically succumbed to his injuries in the early hours of Monday.

The incident took place in Bandipora’s Sumbal area, where Nazakat Ali accidentally fell into the Jhelum river, prompting his sister, Nuzhat Afzal (18), to spring into action without a moment’s hesitation. Locals recounted how she rushed to the scene upon hearing of her brother’s distress, fearlessly jumping into the river to rescue him, despite being unable to swim.

Promptly responding to the emergency, teams from the Jammu Kashmir Police and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) arrived swiftly, determined to save the lives of the two siblings. With their combined efforts, Nuzhat’s lifeless body was recovered from the river in a matter of minutes, while Nazakat was successfully rescued and immediately transported to a nearby hospital for urgent medical treatment.

Devastation struck the family as they mourned the loss of Nuzhat, who had displayed immense bravery and selflessness in her attempt to save her brother’s life. Meanwhile, their kin remained at the Sher-I-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) in Srinagar, clinging to hope for Nazakat’s recovery.

However, despite the best efforts of medical professionals, the young man’s condition deteriorated rapidly, ultimately leading to his tragic demise. Nazakat fought valiantly for survival but, sadly, his injuries proved insurmountable, leaving the family devastated and the locals in mourning.
