The Jammu and Kashmir administration has put forth a proposal for the introduction of two metro lines in the region, aiming to enhance the public transport system in Srinagar and Jammu cities. This move, if approved, will mark the first-ever metro lines in the area and is expected to greatly benefit commuters.
According to Indian Express, J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha confirmed that the proposal has been sent to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs for ministerial consultation, as reported by The Indian Express. Recognizing the limitations of implementing a metro line similar to Delhi’s, the administration has suggested the implementation of a MetroLite system for now.
The proposal includes a 25 km metro line for Srinagar and a 23 km line for Jammu. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs had previously disclosed in a written reply to the Lok Sabha in December 2021 that the governments of Srinagar and Jammu had requested financial assistance from the central government for metro projects.
The MetroLite system is characterized as a light urban rail transit system with reduced capacity and significantly lower costs. The Ministry stated that the implementation of MetroLite would involve a lower capital cost and also result in reduced operation and maintenance expenses, making the system financially viable. The affordability of these new transit modes, such as MetroLite and MetroNeo, stems from factors such as lighter civil structures, smaller stations, low-power electrical equipment, and lower operation and maintenance costs. Moreover, these systems can be utilized as feeder systems for conventional metro rail networks.
The proposed metro lines in Srinagar and Jammu will not only enhance the transportation options for residents but also address the increasing demand for efficient and reliable public transit. The introduction of the MetroLite system is expected to revolutionize travel patterns and bring convenience to the daily lives of commuters in both cities.
Once the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs completes the ministerial consultation and provides the necessary approvals, the Jammu and Kashmir administration can move forward with the implementation of the proposed metro lines. The successful realization of these projects will signify a significant milestone in the development of the region’s transportation infrastructure, providing a boost to the public transport system and improving the overall connectivity in Srinagar and Jammu.
